Cause of Establishment:It's said that during a hunting expedition a Sadhu gave the Maharana that if he liked he could fly in the sky with the tablet in his mouth. Because of this miraculous efficacy the Maharana would go to Jagannathpuri every day to have a darshan of Jagdish ji and come back. One Day the Maharana got late. The Temple had been closed and the temple was not opened for 15 days as was the tradition. The King in his dream saw Lord Jagdishji who ordered him to build a temple in Udaipur where the deity said he would come . On returning, the Maharana started construction of a temple under the supervision of Arjuna Mana and Mukand.

Important Architectural Characteristics:

The Four Armed black stone idol of Lord Vishnu is of the human size and East facing. The height of the idol is 87 inches where as the niche is only 24 inches high. Right to the principal idol, there are idols of Girdhar Gopal Lord Krishna (in black stone) and Shri Maha Laxmi.

Important Architectural Characteristics:

Presently this is a protected temple. From Sculpture and architecture point of view it is unique. On a 25 ft. high plinth stands the temple 100 ft. high and the flagstaff is 18 inch. Thick and 28 ft. high. This is made of wood but covered with golden layer. The edifice of the temple is propped by 50 pillars and every pillar is an unparalleled work of sculpture. On this statue many serpents have been shown coiling around it. In the four corners of the temple campus, there are other four small shrines of Parvati, Gauri Shankar, Ganpati, Surya and Shakti. The alloyed statue of Garudji is perhaps the biggest in the world.At the back of the sepents have been shown so beautifully that they make the statue very grand and astonishing. There is a flight of 32 marble steps to reach the temple. On either side of the flight of steps stands an elephant in stone with its trunk uplifted as though it was welcoming the visitors. These elephant have been built with a combination of 11 stones blocks but the joints are never visible. The kind of style of sculpture which temples of Khajuraho temples have is also visible here.

Religious aspects of temple:

Devotion to Lord Jagannath and daily prayers in the prescribed scriptural way are the main things of the temple. This temple holds unimportance almost people is the temple of Jagannath ji at Puri. This is said to be a dream born temple.

Unique features of the temple:

This vaishnava temple is 125 ft. high from the ground level and stands on 50 artistic columns. In the four corners of the temples are also small shrines. The Garud statue is one of the best in the world. Out of the sanctum sanctorum there are countless statues of various postures and in various moods and they depict themes of all sects and their doctrines.

Festivals & Fairs in Temple (Main Events):

Janmasthami, Dev Jhulani Ekadashi, Deepawali, Holi, Nirjala Ekadashi, are they main festivals while the Rathyatra or carriage drive is one of the most celebrating functions.

Custom & Traditions of Temple:

Pooja is performed on the pattern adopted at the Jagannath temple of the Puri. The Priests are of the same family who over the generation have been acting as priests. The Rath Yatra is Carried through the the main fairs of the city of Udaipur.

The Temple is under the protection of the Devasthan Vibhag. Some years ago renovation of the temple was done by Avas Vikas Sansthan. The statutes were also cleaned. Presently also a marble hall is being built around the parikrama or the circumambulatory paths.
