Cause of Establishment:
This place was the site where Mother Karaniji practiced asterism. Shri Karaniji was the Goddess of the Bikaner  royal family. When the Bikaner King achieved victory over the Mughal King Kumaran, Rao Jaitasi, to commemorate the event built this temple.

       
Brief of the Diety:

The idol of Karani Mataji called Dewali is enshrined here. The descendants of Karni Mataji Depawats worship this temple as priests alternately month by month. The idol of deity is one feet three inches wide and two and half feet tall.

The temple belongs to Shakta Sampradaya.

Important Architectural Characteristics:

The principal temple along with the circumambulatory path and outer walls is built of red stone but the main gate is grand and high and it is made of marble on which beautiful carving work has been done. Infront of the inner temple marble has been elegantly used. The entire floor of the temple is also of marble. Inside the inner temple the small shrine which is said to have been made 600 years ago by Karni Mata herself is present. This shrine the small one and it was built with brick and round stones.

Material of Construction:

White and black marble, red stone, round stones and lime mortar.

Total Construction Time: The temple was established in Samvat 1594 (1537 A.D.). Since then the temple has had a history of growth.
Religious aspects of temple:

This place is sacred to Karnimata. This is a place of worship of and Karnimata had in fact performed various disports. When Karnimata left for her heavenly abode she was deified and her descendants began to worship her. To preserve her memory and to offer worships and prayers this temple was constructed. It should be known that Deshnok is the point from which erstwhile State of Bikaner begins.

Unique features of the temple:

The thing which strike everyone with wonder is the presence of thousands and thousands of rats in the temple which freely moved about unscared of anyone.Despite the presence of the rats in great numbers. At no time in the past plague brought broke out here. There was no incidence of plague at all. People deem this as an miracle of Karanimata. In the whole world this is a unique temple where rats freely move out.

In the Navratras of the month of Ashwina, a big fair is held while a minor fair is also held in the Navratras of Chaitra.

Custom & Traditions of Temple:

The priests of Shakta cult worshiped the Goddess. The rats are fed on Milk and Laddu. The descendants of Karnimata who are Depawats of the Charana Community worship the Goddess. Whenever someone's whishes are fulfilled, he prepares prasadam in two big cauldrons of iron. This prasadam is distributed amongst who are present and all who visit.
