Cause of Establishment:
When the great fort of Ranthambhor was occupied by Akbar, Rao Surjan Singh brought two idols of Lorf Vishnu with him from Ranthambhor to Bundi. Rao Bhojraj (1585 to 1607) was impelled by his queen who wanted one idol to be established in the city of Bundi and another at Baran. Thus the temple of Shri Kalyan Raiji was built at Baran where one idol of Lord Vishnu was enshrined.

       
Brief of the Diety:

The idol of Lord Kalyan Raiji is of black stone and in a standing posture. The daily service and pooja is conducted in accordance with the traditions of Ramanuj Sampradaya of Vaishnavas. The Mahant of the temple attains a priesthood in accordance with hereditary.

Religious sect to which the temple belongs:

All Hindus worship the deity but from the sect point of view this belongs to Ramanuj Sampradaya.

Important Architectural Characteristics:

The entrance gate of the temple is splendid. At the entrance, there is a Nakkarkhana where the Nakkaras (kettledrums) are beaten at the time of Aarati. There are two canopies built over them. Ahead is a big chowk in which there is massive pillar. On the top of the pillar is a rectangular canopy where the statue of Garudji (the carrier of Lord Vishnu) is installed.

Important Architectural Characteristics:

  The inner temple is built in Nagar style and is of a square shape. On the panel gate of sanctum sanctorum an idol of Mahavirji is encarved around which hyamns have been also shown. There is a round shape shikhar on the temple and a verandah in front. A shikhar has been built on verandah also. On the pinnacle, a fully blooming louts flower has been made in the center of which three urns (kalash) one on another, have been made.

The purpose of the temple is to propagate the principles of Ramanuj Sampradaya and to spread devotion for the deity amongst the people.

Unique features of the temple:

This is a principal temple of the Hadoti Region. The kettledrum of Baran are famous in Rajasthan. The temple has a big Zagir of about 3300 bighas of land.

Festivals & Fairs in Temple (Main Events):

The main festivals are Dol Yatra Edadashi, Janmashtami, Annakoota, Phooldol. On Dol Yatra Ekadashi a dol (palanquin) bearing the statue of Kalyan Raiji is carried in a procession. Fifteen days fair is joyously attended by villagers in large number.

Others: The temple is built in nagar style of architecture. The shikhar is of round shape. On the front of sanctum sanctorum the image of Mahavirji is incurved. The seat in the shrine is beautifully artistic and is covered with silver work.

Issues requiring global attention for conservation, protection and improvement of the temple:

The domes or shikhars of the temple have developed cracks, which must be repaired, Dol Yatra is very grand and worth seeing. Tourists must be attracted to see this special function.
